Assigned gender at birth. The gender people say a child is when they’re born, which may be different from the gender the child sees themselves as they grow up. A person is usually either assigned female at birth—AFAB for short—or assigned male at birth—AMAB. We talk about gender assigned at birth when we mention people who share parts of that experience as a whole. For example, we can say AFAB when we want to discuss people who were raised as a girl, or who have a uterus if we’re talking about reproductive health. But we should be careful in using that term form nonbinary and trans folks when it’s not necessary, as it focuses on a gender identity they often have rejected.
