Hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A medical treatment transgender or non-binary people take to feel that their body matches their gender. The body develops in a more masculine or feminine way, depending on the hormones people use. Not all transgender people take this type of treatment, either because they don’t have access to it; for medical reasons; to avoid discrimination that visible changes can attract; by choice, often because their body suits them already; or for any other reason. HRT is used for other medical reasons besides affirming gender identity.
